A majority of diamond shoppers are aware of the 4Cs while buying a diamond ring. Among the 4Cs of diamonds, the one which is commonly misunderstood is the clarity. Most people tend to associate it with the size of a diamond. However, it actually refers to its weight.

Another reason why there is some confusion surrounding carat is that sometimes they tend to confuse the meaning of carat for gold and diamonds. For gold, it indicates its purity whereas, for diamonds, it is the measurement of its weight. A detailed description of the carat of a diamond is given below.

What is carat and why it is important?
It is an open secret that the price of a diamond, to a large extent, depends on its size. The standard unit for measuring the weight of diamonds is the metric carat. One metric carat is equivalent to 0.20 gram. Other than diamonds, it is also used as the standard for measuring the weight of other gemstones.

With all factors taken into consideration, the weight of a diamond plays an important role in enhancing its value – the more it weighs, the more valuable it is.

Usually, gemological laboratories provide the measurement of loose diamonds, alongside a mention of other aspects like size, colour and inclusions. For mounted diamonds, gemological laboratories use ultrasensitive scales in order to get the exact weight up to 3 decimal places.

At present, laboratories generally certify diamonds that are more than one carat in weight. The carat comprises a hundred particular parts. These parts are called points.

Carat Weight Factors
In the measurement of carat weight, there are two primary factors – the top diameter and its cut grade. The former is measured in millimetres and shows the distance between the two sides at the top portion.

On the other hand, the cut grade has a bearing on the way the light reflects while passing through a piece of diamond. That is to say, it goes on to decide the sparkle of a diamond.

When the two-carat weight factors are taken into consideration at the same time, it tells how good a diamond would look on an engagement diamond ring for women. While diamonds with smaller carat weight and higher cut grades appear larger (considered ideal), those diamonds that have a higher carat weight but lower cut grades may belong to any one out of the three categories – good, fair and poor.

If you are looking for a large carat diamond within a tight budget, give it a thought to buy a diamond with greater cut value. Consider buying one with either I or J colour grading and Sl1-Sl2 clarity.

If the wearer has small fingers, the diamond will appear large. So, do not forget to take the finger size of the wearer into account while buying a diamond piece for them. Lastly, do not forget that all settings do not fit all diamond shapes or carats. Therefore, take a careful look at the diamond specifications while selecting a setting for engagement diamond ring for women.
